Damages on the cabinets & countertops – what to do?

Damages on the cabinets & countertops – what to do?

Accidents happen, that is something we know for sure.

A moment of carelessness is more than enough to cause damage to your kitchen furniture (and hopefully not to yourself) by a dropped knife or a heavy, dull object.

And you don’t even need to be in the middle of cooking, cabinets and countertops can suffer damage in many other ways, like an unlucky movement with a household ladder in your hands, or simply your child playing too harshly with their toys.

Because yes, cabinet doors are vulnerable to metal and hard plastic objects, and stone or porcelain countertops can chip or crack from an involuntary collision.

Can these “injuries” be repaired, or should you consider the change of the affected piece?

Now we’ll try to find the answer to that!

Damages done to the cabinets

Cabinets and doors are the most vulnerable parts of the kitchen furniture, believe it or not.

Since they are almost always made of wood like pine, maple or hardwoods, chipboard or plywood, and usually are painted or laminated, any object harder than the surface itself can cause damage.

Dents, scratches, chippings occur often, and as time passes, the number of these can grow.

Can these damages be repaired, you are asking?

Well, yes, up to a certain level.

A painted cabinet or door can be repaired by the hands of a professional with wood filler and the same type of paint, but colors change by time, so the repair work will probably stay visible.

In case of laminated chipboard, if the thin plastic layer is hurt, there is not much to do.

Moisture will find its way inside, and it’s only a matter of time until the inevitable replacing.

Repairing damaged countertops

Repairing damaged countertops

Countertops are different from cabinets, because they are usually thicker, and can be made of harder materials like stone or porcelain.

Of course, hardwood and chipboard countertops are common as well, but the same rules apply to these as to the cabinets and doors.

Stone and artificial stone-like materials are a whole other topic, because of their inner structure.

Since wood (and other wood-based materials) are built up from cellulose fiber, while the ones mentioned first have a crystalline structure, it is no wonder that they can be repaired more easily.

A cracked, chipped or scratched stone surface can be restored almost fully – but again, by professionals.

We do not recommend you to attempt the repair work yourself, it requires certain tools and experience.
