Lighting of your kitchen – how to make it practical and aesthetic

Since humans are not nocturnal beings, we need light to see where we are going, what we are doing.

This is also true for our living environment, this is why our homes have artificial light sources, so that we can do whatever we want even after sundown.

From simple lamps to elegant chandeliers the options are almost infinite, depending on the characteristics and style of the interior; anyone can find the solutions that fits their needs the most.

But kitchens can be considered special from this point of view, because preparing a meal is quite difficult in semidarkness, that’s for sure!

So the lighting of your kitchen should be practical and well-constructed, furthermore aesthetic, not to ruin your pleasure.

Let us give you a few tips how can your kitchen be perfectly lighted!

Where to place the sources of light?

If you are unsatisfied with your current kitchen, and you are planning a remodel, besides the cabinets and countertops you must rethink the problem of lights as well.

Nobody likes to cook or dine in the dark, so one central ceiling light will probably be insufficient, therefore you’ll need to have them at multiple locations all around.

For example:

  • you will probably need at least one central ceiling light, depending on the size on the kitchen;
  • secondly, you must see what you are doing even at night, so you’ll need lights above the sink and the countertops preparing section;
  • in addition, it can be really useful, if you have inner lights inside your cabinets, especially if they are wide and deep.

But the mount of light sources really depends on your personal preference, so you can put them wherever you want, just make sure they are able to perform their task!

The colors of your kitchen count as well!

The colors of your kitchen count as well!

There is something you need to take into account, and that is the general lightness/darkness of your kitchen.

If you have bright colored cabinets and countertops, for example white, light grey or beige, then you can reach the same goal with less light sources.

But if you have dark natural woods, or dark colors like blue and black with dark countertops, then you should think of increasing the number of lights, not to feel like you’re in a cave.

Plus the hue of your walls also count, although the contrast between dark furniture and light wall surfaces can be absolutely pleasant.
