Marble countertops for your cabinets – is it a good idea?

Marble countertops for your cabinets – is it a good idea?

Marble has been preferred by humans since the ancient times for its marvelous colors and textures.

It was used as a building material and for crafting items and sculptures as well, and we use it nowadays too for the same purposes.

But at the same time, since marble is now affordable for a wider audience, it is also popular in kitchens and bathrooms.

A set of marble countertops can be seen as a symbol of status, although it may not be the best choice if you’re thinking of a kitchen remodel.

But why?

If you are interested, keep reading for more details!

Why is marble so popular?

If you are wondering why marble became so popular as a countertop material, we should give it a closer look, and you’ll understand it.

Marble is a natural stone, related to limestone, but with a much harder and consistent structure.

It can be cut and carved more precisely, and usually has beautiful dark vein-like patterns in it.

Marble is available in many colors and hues, depending on its source, but the most preferred ones come from Europe.

When it’s polished and sealed, the surface of the countertop will be smooth and shiny, just as most of us would like it.

So, why can it be problematic, if you choose marble as the material?

Problems with marble

Problems with marble

Although marble can create a harmonious vibe with a matching set of cabinets (especially darker ones), you should consider twice choosing it as a countertop material.

Not just because of its price, but of the physical attributes the stone has.

Since marble is of natural source, it has some weaknesses that makes it a less desirable choice compared to artificial slab materials:

  • marble is quite porous, so despite polishing and sealants, it can be stained by oils and slightly acidic liquids, like wine or vinegar;
  • marble is hard, but not that much, so it is not so scratch-resistant – knives and other kitchen tools might leave their marks on the surface if you’re not careful enough;
  • and last, but not least, the maintenance of a marble countertop can be pricy, so unless you treat it with very high care, you’ll have to calculate with it.

So, what is the best solution?

If you’re planning the remodeling of your kitchen cabinets, or a whole new kitchen, and you’d like it to be made with marble-like countertops, should you choose actual marble?

Well, you can, but there are better solutions.

Artificial materials, like porcelain offer the same look, but without all the disadvantages of the natural stone!

Porcelain is scratch and stain resistant, needs no maintenance, and cheaper than marble, so the decision may be easier than you thought!
