Mixing Metals in the Kitchen: A Fresh Trend for 2023

Mixing Metals in the Kitchen: A Fresh Trend for 2023

Some prefer unity, some prefer diversity, but we can all agree on something: it is risky to mix too many types of materials in a relatively small area.

No one desires to have their homes look like a witches’ kitchen from an old, cheap fantasy movie, with overcrowded furniture, tools and junk all around.

A kitchen is considered livable if it’s cozy, practical, and has enough space to move around wherever you want.

And still, combining whole different materials, especially metals, was taboo, up until now!

2023 has brought new trends that are like a breath of fresh air, for example the use of different metals in the same kitchen – not just two, but even three, four or more!

Patinated copper, old school bronze, shining brass and bright stainless steel are no longer distant relatives, but a group of friends that get along excellently!

Cool metals VS. Warm metals

The main contrast between types of metals comes from their colors – we’re not talking about literally cool and warm, but their hues.

Copper and its alloys, such as brass and bronze are considered warm, since they mainly appear in shades of yellows, reds and browns – the main colors of summer and fall.

In contrast to that, steel surfaces are usually grey and silver, which are considered cool, as they are colors of winter.

The former doctrine was to stick with one of these that harmonizes with the hues of your cabinets.

For example, if you have white, grey or other light cabinet doors and shelves, you should choose matte or polished steel, but if you have a more classical natural wood set, then you should go with brass or copper handles and accessories.

But nowadays, it is absolutely OK to have them mixed as you please.

A central piece as the highlight of the kitchen

Where to start? – you may ask, if you’re thinking of remodeling your kitchen according to these new trends; what could be your first and most important improvement?

Let’s thing big, and maybe begin with a larger piece, a range hood for example!

It is a very dominant element of a kitchen, and the metal it is made of defines the way you can stride on.

If it’s stainless steel, you can go with non-ferrous metal cabinet hardware with ease, and vice versa, a copper or bronze hood can be supplemented with steel handles and pendant lights.

Painted and plated metals are in the game too!

Painted and plated metals are in the game too!

Why should we stay only with “natural” metal surfaces, when there are heaps of techniques to change the color of a metal object?

Paint doesn’t have to be a thick and plastic-like layer anymore, there are excellent methods of coloring a surface that still preserves the typical metallic shine.

And what about rust?

Of course, an element made of Corten steel can be highly decorative, but in most cases, it is unwanted – and can be prevented with zinc plating or a galvanized surfaces!

While zinc plated steel is usually pale and/or matte, galvanized metal objects are shiny, or even colorful, depending on the thin layer of metal used.

Cabinet hardware with such surface treatments are also desirable, it only depends on your personal preferences and needs!
