The prevalent kitchen trends of 2021

Hard times change the way we organize our homes, and that’s exactly what happened in 2020.

Most people spend a lot more time at home, therefore it’s not surprising they want to create designs that are welcoming, homely and warm while also 100% practical.

If you’re planning a kitchen remodel anytime soon, it can be useful to be aware of the latest kitchen trends.

That said, we collected some of the most interesting and sometimes surprising trends of 2021.

Contrasting warm tones

While white and gray Shaker-style cabinets are still super popular, demand for colorful painted cabinets and clear finishes is on the rise too.

The 2021 color palette includes beige and terracotta with accents of different shades of orange and other warm, optimistic hues which are soothing to look at when we spend a lot of time indoors.

Colors often found in nature such as blue and green are gaining popularity too.

It has also become quite common to contrast the colors of the cabinets and the kitchen island to make the island really stand out.

Mix-and-match materials

The colors of cabinets and islands are not the only contrasts in 2021 kitchens.

It seems that homeowners like blending different styles to match their tastes, and aren’t shy to marry brass and copper handles with marble countertops to complement marble’s cold, elegant surface.

Different shades of wood paired with stainless steel create a modern but warm contrast.

And as for the flooring, hardwood seems to be losing its absolute dominance, as many homeowners are opting for colorful vinyl flooring or patterned floor tiles, which give the kitchen a more Mediterranean feel.

Backsplashes up to the ceiling

Backsplashes up to the ceiling

Extended backsplashes are one of the most practical kitchen trends of 2021.

Why limit yourself to “outdated” standard height backsplashes when you can go all the way up till the ceiling (or at least till the bottom of your cabinets)?

Some homeowners even cover an entire wall in marble, quartz, porcelain or any other material of their choice, and extend the backsplash around the windows, thus adding a decorative, easy-to-clean layer to the walls in the busiest parts of the kitchen.

Less open floor plans

Home-office may be the most logical reason for homeowners not going for the open floor plan as often as they used to.

As sometimes whole families are stuck at home together, it’s natural that sharing the same space can get overwhelming, and more walls are needed.

Separating the kitchen and the living room creates two zones, which is an ideal solution for times when we just need a bit of privacy to really focus on our work.

Maximized storage space

Maximized storage space

Since many of us have been home-officing lately, we are more likely to eat more home-cooked meals.

The extra time we save by not having to commute to work every single day can be spent shopping for fresh ingredients and preparing our favorite dishes at home.

Longer shopping lists and extra groceries mean more storage space necessary to keep the kitchen clutter-free.

Many homeowners choose to add extra shelving a drawers to their cabinets

Pantries and larder cupboards became extremely popular in 2021, since they allow you to have more storage space, while there’s no need to cover your kitchen walls in cupboards and cabinets.

The blank wall space that’s freed up thanks to the larder can be used for open shelving or a floating table to create another eating area within the kitchen.
